ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC FOUNDATION

GETS Primary is part of the GETS for School suite of three exams that is world’s first English language assessment for schools, developed on the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) concept.
GETS Primary aims to test learners Academic Language Proficiency and Communication skills thereby helping them develop a stronger foundation for middle school.
GETS Primary exam is suitable for students studying in an English medium school and are aged between 9 and 10 years.
The exam comprises of 3 modules:

  • General English module for 45 minutes
  • Content-Based Language module for 30 minutes
  • Oral Communication Skills module for 6-8 minutes

All the three modules can be taken together on one date or can be scheduled separately.
The results are reported on the GETS Scale of English and is mapped to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
The GETS Primary is a foundation to progress to the GETS Secondary level certification.

The GETS Primary Test comprises of 3 modules, General English, Content-Based Language and Oral Communication Skills.
To complete the GETS Primary test, it takes 75 minutes of written activities and a 6-8 minutes of oral interaction.
Details about each of the 3 modules, what is tested, and task types is given below:
Module #1: General English – About 45 minutes. 25 questions
The module has 3 sections – Listening, Reading and Writing in the Digital age.
This module assesses and provides accurate appraisal of a student’s language competencies in use of Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS).
The five assessment components listed below, form the basis of learning communication and progress in the school environment.

  • Listening Comprehension
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Writing in a Digital Age
  • Lexical Resource
  • Language Structures and Systems

The Task type / question type in the General English module include:

  • Gap-fill
  • Listen and Spell
  • Writing words for definitions
  • Correct sentences
  • Mark right or wrong
  • Answer an Email
  • Listen and Spell
  • Table Completion
  • 3-option multiple choice
  • Give one word for
  • Matching
  • Write response in a good chat

Module #2: Content-Based Language – 30 minutes. 20 questions
This module measures the Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) of a student, which involves understanding and use of formal language for curricular subjects. It assess the student’s ability to think in English and use English for academic purposes.
The assessment components in this module include:

  • Academic Reading
  • Subject Specific Vocabulary
  • Task Understanding
  • Lexical ResoVisual Comprehension

The Task type / question type in this Content-Based Language module include:

  • Matching sentence fragments
  • Multiple choice questions
  • Yes/No type
  • Gap-fill
  • One- or two-word Gap-fill

Module #3: Oral Communication Skills – 6 to 8 minutes
The key purpose of this module is to assess and analyse the student’s ability to talk effectively using both formal and informal language in a variety of settings.
It tests Fluency and the ability to express oneself easily, readily, coherently and effortlessly; Pronunciation or the ability to speak English with clear sounds, stress and intonation; Discourse or success at being able to speak formally and extensively about a topic or to hold a formal discussion on a particular subject; and Interactive Ability or the ability to listen to and respond appropriately while maintaining and developing an interaction.

  • Pronunciation
